Getting started with piano
What age can a child start learning piano?
Most children can start piano between ages 4 and 7. At Rhodes Piano & Art, younger beginners (around 4-8) usually start in our interactive group piano class, while children ready for focused one-on-one attention can begin private AMEB piano at any age. The best starting age depends on your child's attention span and interest more than a fixed number.
Does my child need to read music before starting?
No - your child does not need to read music before their first lesson. We teach note-reading from the very beginning, starting with rhythm, listening, and simple patterns, so complete beginners are welcome in every class.
How long before a child can play a whole song?
Most young beginners play a simple, complete piece within the first few months of weekly lessons. Progress varies with age and home practice, but our step-by-step method is designed so children experience the reward of finishing a real song early.
Group class vs one-on-one
What is the difference between interactive group piano and one-on-one lessons?
Interactive group piano is a small class (1-4 students, 45 minutes) where children learn with on-screen guidance and a teacher, while one-on-one piano is a private 45-minute lesson paced entirely around your child, including AMEB exam preparation. Group classes suit young beginners who enjoy learning together; private lessons suit focused progress and exams.
Should a beginner start in a group or one-on-one?
For most young beginners (around 4-8), the interactive group class is the friendliest first step because it keeps learning playful and social. Children who want individual attention, faster progress, or AMEB exam preparation are better suited to one-on-one piano from the start.
Can my child move from group class to one-on-one AMEB later?
Yes - children regularly move from interactive group piano into one-on-one AMEB lessons when they are ready for deeper, individual work. We help you decide the right time based on your child's progress and interest.
AMEB exams
How does AMEB piano exam grading work?
AMEB (Australian Music Examinations Board) piano exams run from Preliminary through Grade 8 and beyond, testing pieces, technique, aural skills, sight-reading, and general knowledge. Students prepare repertoire and skills over time and sit a formal exam to earn a recognised certificate at each grade.
What is the benefit of sitting AMEB at your studio?
Rhodes Piano & Art is an official AMEB exam venue, so your child can prepare and sit their AMEB piano exam in the same studio they practise in every week. That means no unfamiliar building on exam day, less travel, and far fewer exam-day nerves.
How do I prepare my child for their first AMEB exam?
The best preparation is consistent weekly one-on-one lessons where the teacher builds exam pieces, scales, aural, sight-reading, and general knowledge over several months. Your teacher will tell you when your child is ready and guide the enrolment and timing.
Creative art classes
What ages is the art class for, and how long is it?
Our creative art classes are for children roughly ages 3-10 and run 90 minutes weekly in a small class of 1-6 students. The longer session gives children time to plan, make, and finish artwork they are proud to bring home.
What materials does the art class use?
Children explore drawing, painting, colour, clay, collage, and mixed media, and all materials are included in the class fee. Projects are designed to build creativity, motor skills, and confidence over time.
Can a child with no drawing experience join?
Yes - complete beginners are welcome and most children start with no formal art experience. Classes are taught in small groups so the teacher can support each child at their own level.
Fees and Active and Creative Kids
How much do children's piano lessons cost in Sydney?
In Sydney, children's piano lessons typically range from about $40 to $95 per lesson depending on lesson length and format, with 60-minute or advanced lessons higher. At Rhodes Piano & Art, interactive group piano is $650 per 10-lesson term (45 minutes) and one-on-one piano starts from $875 per 10-lesson term (45 minutes), with a one-time $80 registration fee for new piano enrolments.
How much is a trial lesson and what happens?
Trial lessons are $50 for one-on-one piano and $30 for interactive group piano or creative art. You book a trial through our contact form, we confirm a time, and your child attends a single class so you can see the teacher style and environment before enrolling.
What can Active and Creative Kids vouchers be used for?
Rhodes Piano & Art is a registered NSW Active and Creative Kids provider, so eligible families can put Active and Creative Kids vouchers - two $50 vouchers a year for NSW children aged 4.5-18 whose carer receives Family Tax Benefit - toward our piano and art lessons. You give us the voucher code when enrolling and we redeem it against your fees.
Visiting and booking
Where is the studio and how do I get there?
Rhodes Piano & Art is at Level 10F, Rhodes Waterside Shopping Centre, Rhodes NSW 2138, with lift access next to Reading Cinemas. There is convenient parking in the centre, so families often combine lessons with shopping.
Do we need a piano or keyboard at home?
A piano or keyboard at home is recommended for practice but not required to start. For beginners a basic weighted keyboard is enough; we can advise on suitable options, and we also stock interactive pianos and keyboards in our shop.
How do I book a trial class?
Book a trial by filling in the enquiry form on our contact page with your child's age and preferred class, and we will contact you to confirm a time. You can choose one-on-one piano, interactive group piano, or creative art.
